Yes, you. By the end of this post, I want you all to tell me to go jump in a lake; that I’m way off base and that you are appalled that I would even suggest such a thing. I want you to argue your case and tell me why this post doesn’t apply to you. Why? Well, because we hope that our long-time readers don’t fit the bill for the following list of the top 5 reasons why burglars love you:

You Believe That Burglaries Don’t Happen in Your Neighborhood

Your neighborhood is a safe one, right? You can leave your doors unlocked, sleep with your windows open and you can even leave your garage door wide open while you’re away without having to worry about an intruder violating your space. This sort of security is a perk of the neighborhood that you choose to live in, right? One where there’s very little crime, everyone knows each other and you don’t feel as though you have to look over your shoulder 24 hours a day, right?

Well, burglars love you because you’re misinformed about the types of neighborhoods where burglaries are prone to happen. Try this: call your local police department and ask them how safe all of the behaviors described above actually are. Ask them how likely it is that a burglar would target your home. Can’t blame a burglar for singling out homeowners like yourself (well, you can blame them, but…) because you make it so easy for them.

You Don’t Believe That Home Security Alarms Actually Work

Browsing the web, it’s easy to find armchair security experts disseminating false information. They maintain that security alarms are a waste of time and that alarm monitoring is a waste of money. Burglars love it when you listen to these people because then they don’t have to worry about you erecting barriers between them and the contents of your home.

You Believe That a Gun Is All the Security That You Need

On the one hand, a burglar may fear you if he knows that you have a gun. That’s a big if, though, since he likely wouldn’t know this just by looking at your house or even by watching you come and go. Still, burglars love you because, even if they know that you are armed and dangerous, they also know that you’re not always at home.

Since burglars have one goal  in mind…a good score, they may also find your home attractive because, let’s face it, guns can sometimes net a good profit. And if you’re an avid gun collector without an alarm system, even better! Yep, a gun can be a source of protection, but if it’s the only protection that exists, you just might attract a burglar who likes your guns, too.

You Believe That Your Dog Is All the Protection That You Need

Burglars study their trade and, believe it or not, not all of them are afraid of dogs. Besides, a lot of burglars are people who’ve been in your home before and who either know your dog or know that your dog is all bark and little bite. Even if you have a big ferocious dog, a determined burglar will likely get around her or him if the stakes are high enough for him to want to try. Things like poisoning dogs or harming them in some other way are stories which abound in the press. I’ll spare you the gory details, but Google: dog hurt during burglary if you don’t believe me.

Now, to be fair, not every burglar will love you if you’re of this mindset and a dog can be a good deterrent. We even sell the Rex Plus Electronic Watchdog Alarm, because we know that a barking dog is a good security layer. If it is the only security measure that you’ve taken to protect your home, however, you just may be warming a burglar’s heart without even knowing it.

By the way, did I ever tell you about the time that our dog was shot by burglars? Yeah, it can happen.

Beyond Locking Your Doors and Windows, Home Security Rarely Ever Crosses Your Mind

If home security isn’t even on your radar, you are a burglar’s dream. They love it when things like seeking security tips or installing an alarm kit are the furthest from your mind. Not to worry, they’ll probably find your home a less attractive target once it’s broken into, however. After all, it’s usually only after such an unfortunate event that people like yourself begin to fortify a home with various home security devices.

Do Burglars Fancy You?

As things stand right now, are you the type of homeowner that a burglar hopes to find? Or are we completely off base in terms of how you view home security? If you don’t want your house or apartment to be a burglar’s dream destination, then we’re here to help you figure out how to make it as unattractive to these types of criminals as possible.
